The National University of Costa Rica (UNA) is organizing a series of virtual forums on environmental issues and sustainable tourism in the Latin American and Caribbean region. Three forums between June and September 2021 will be available for public access through Zoom. Below is the specific information for each forum.

 

Virtual Forum # 2: Tourism, society and environment: challenges, progress and pending

 

Date and time: August 19, 3-5 pm (Costa Rica Time)

Description:

The forum introduces a discussion on global, regional and local challenges that put life on the planet at risk, accompanied by international, national and local commitments, leading to a cultural transition towards sustainability.

 

Its objective is to present and make a broad discussion on the ecological interconnections present in the territories of tourist use. It asks what kind of development is needed? From a critical position and perspective that questions the modes of production and consumption promoted by the traditional model of tourism development that in many cases depredates ecosystems, in addition to discussing the collateral social issues of the great transformations of the economic, political and geography structure. socio-environmental.

 

Specific objectives:

  • Analyze and characterize the main recent global changes that affect communities, nature and tourism.
  • Analyze the impacts of recent global changes in the tourism sector.
  • Discuss and understand existing conflicts in cases of tourism.

Virtual Forum # 3: Sustainable Tourism, Optimal Resource Management and Sustainable Development (STOREM): opportunities and challenges for postgraduate studies in Latin America and the Caribbean

 

Date and time: September 23 from 3-5 pm (Costa Rica Time)

General objective:

To present a critical and reflective perspective on the reality of tourism and sustainable development in the global space, with a focus on Latin America, mainly Mesoamerica and the Caribbean.

Virtual Forum # 1: Environmental problems, regional agreements and commitments: challenges, progress and pending in Latin America and the Caribbean

 

Date and time: June 24 from 3-5 pm (Costa Rica Time)

Description:

The objective of the forum is to present and make a broad discussion on the international environmental perspective and regional commitments regarding the application of agreements. Its sources, rules and principles must be analyzed and the international organizations that act and have management and decision-making power in this field must be understood. Global, regional and national case studies should also be developed; among them the Escazú Agreement.

 

Specific objectives:

  • Analyze and contextualize the role played by international environmental law in favor of sustainable development today.
  • Understand socio-environmental conflicts from case studies in tourism and the environment.
